About Fred Again
By Taylor Jay Williams
Fred Again. Frederick John Philip Gibson. The most human face of electronic music in the 2020s — which is a curious thing to say about a producer who started as a classical pianist and session musician. Born in 93 in Balham, south London. Raised in a musical household. Attended the BRIT School. Before releasin' his own music, he co-wrote and produced for Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, Stormzy. Earned his stripes behind the scenes.
His debut project Actual Life (April 14 – December 17 2020) was unlike anythin' else that year. A musical diary of lockdown — samplin' voicenotes, text messages, audio clips from friends, family, strangers. Buildin' shimmerin' melancholic dance tracks out of the intimate debris of everyday life. Julia (Deep Diving), memorialisin' a friend he'd lost — the achin' sincerity. He invented a new kind of confessional electronic music. Every drop felt like a shared secret.
Actual Life 2 and Actual Life 3 continued the project, each more accomplished. Marea (We've Lost Dancing) and Delilah (Pull Me Out of This) became anthems for a generation emergin' from the isolation of the pandemic — euphoric builds carryin' an undercurrent of collective grief and hope.
Then the Boiler Room set. April 2023. It broke the internet. Millions watched as he hunched over his laptop, buildin' and rebuildin' tracks in real time. Surrounded by a crowd that wept, screamed, and sang every word. leavemealone with Baby Keem. Rumble with Skrillex and Flowdan. Raw, emotionally overwhelmin'. Felt more like a church service than a DJ set. Boiler Room called it the most-watched set in its history.
His ability to connect — to turn the digital sample-based tools of electronic music into somethin' profoundly human — that's his gift. Secret Life (23), a collaboration with Brian Eno, was a meditative ambient record that confirmed his range. By 24, he was headlinin' Glastonbury's Other Stage and sellin' out arenas worldwide. Fred Again reinvented electronic music — not cold algorithmic beats, but a warm, weepin', laughin', dancin' thing. A diary made of sound.
