About Queen

By Robert Williams

Queen are one of the most beloved and commercially successful acts in British music history — a band whose sound was so distinctive, so theatrical, and so gloriously oversized that they could only have come from one place. Formed in London in 1970, the line-up of Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums), and John Deacon (bass) remained unchanged for two decades. I've got the full studio catalogue on vinyl, and I still remember the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody on the radio. I was maybe eleven. It stopped me in my tracks.

Before Queen, Freddie was an art-school graduate and Brian May a PhD candidate in astrophysics — intellectual flamboyance that set 'em apart from the denim-and-leather rock bands of the early 70s. The self-titled debut arrived in 73, but it was Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack that began to define their layered operatic sound. Then came A Night at the Opera in 75.

That album contained Bohemian Rhapsody — a six-minute suite that defied every convention of the pop single. A cappella intro, operatic middle section, hard-rock finale. Radio programmers said it was unplayable. The record label said it was unmarketable. The band insisted. It spent nine weeks at number one and became one of the best-sellin' singles of all time. The promotional video is often credited as the first true music video. Proper boss. Six UK number one albums. Fifteen UK number one singles. Greatest Hits is the best-sellin' album in UK chart history.

Live performance was their great callin' card. Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest frontmen in rock history — a commandin', theatrical presence who could hold 100,000 people in the palm of his hand. Their 1985 performance at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium is frequently voted the greatest live performance of all time. Twenty minutes so electrifyin' that even the other acts watchin' from side stage were left speechless.

The 80s saw Queen embrace a more pop-oriented sound — Radio Ga Ga, I Want to Break Free, A Kind of Magic. And We Will Rock You with that stomp-stomp-clap rhythm became a staple at sportin' events worldwide. Their 1986 Magic Tour played to over a million people, includin' a legendary show at Knebworth — the biggest outdoor concert in UK history at the time.

Freddie died in 1991 from complications of AIDS, aged 45. A profound loss. The tribute concert at Wembley, the posthumous singles, and the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody introduced Queen to an entirely new generation. They matter because they proved British rock could be theatrical, multi-layered, and unashamedly grand without losin' its emotional core. Opera, hard rock, pop, gospel, vaudeville — fused into somethin' utterly unique. They were unapologetically flamboyant in an era of punk minimalism. And they won.
