About The Rolling Stones

By Robert Williams

If The Beatles were the bright optimistic face of the British Invasion, The Rollin' Stones were its sneerin' dangerous shadow. Formed in London in 62, the Stones built their reputation on a visceral blend of Chicago blues, swaggerin' attitude, and a refusal to play by the establishment's rules. More than sixty years on, they remain the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World' — and it's a title few would dare dispute.

I've got every Stones album up to the 80s in my collection. The early stuff on vinyl, the mid-period on CD. Mick Jagger's magnetic stage presence paired with Keith Richards's raw open-G guitar — a partnership that became one of the most celebrated songwritin' duos in history. Alongside Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts — the greatest drummer in rock, always overlooked because he sat so still. Charlie never made a fuss. Just played. Perfect.

Their early singles — Not Fade Away, Tell Me — established 'em as the rowdy alternative to the clean-cut Beatles. Then came (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction in 65. That riff. One of the most iconic in history. Captured adolescent frustration with an authenticity that resonated across continents. The Stones were the band parents worried about, and kids loved 'em for it.

The late 60s saw 'em deepen their sound. Beggars Banquet (68) with Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. Let It Bleed (69) with Gimme Shelter — that song still sends a chill down your spine. The tragic death of Brian Jones in July 69, just days after bein' fired from the band, cast a long shadow. But they pressed on with Mick Taylor.

The 70s brought the creative zenith. Sticky Fingers (71) with Brown Sugar and Wild Horses. Then Exile on Main St (72) — a sprawlin' double-album masterpiece recorded in a villa in the South of France. Dense, chaotic, soaked in blues, gospel, country, and rock and roll. Widely regarded as the band's finest work. A document of a band livin' on the edge and thrivin' there.

Eight UK number one singles. Thirteen UK number one albums — the most recent bein' Blue & Lonesome in 2016. The longest-runnin' chart career of any group in UK history. And live — boss. From the free Hyde Park concert of 69 to the colossal stadium tours ever since. Charlie Watts's imperturbable drummin', Keith's louche guitar heroics, Jagger's relentless athleticism — the gold standard.

The Rollin' Stones matter because they proved longevity and rebellion could coexist. Where many of their peers burned bright and faded, the Stones kept goin', adaptin' their sound while never abandonin' their blues core. British rock could be gritty, sexy, and intellectual all at once. And they're still goin'. Sound.
