About The Who

By Robert Williams

The Who. My Generation. The song that started with Roger Daltrey stutterin' — 'I-I-I-I-I get by with a little help from my friends'? No, that's not it. 'Talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation.' That stutter was meant to capture the sound of a mod on speed. Proper punk before punk existed. And that song changed everythin'.

Formed in Shepherd's Bush, London in 64, The Who were the thinking man's mod band. Pete Townshend with his windmill guitar, Keith Moon — the maddest drummer in rock — flailin' at his kit, John Entwistle standin' stock still playin' bass like it was a lead instrument, and Roger Daltrey at the front with that golden voice and the fringe. They didn't just play music — they attacked it. Their live shows famously ended with the destruction of their instruments. Smashin' guitars and drums before anyone thought to call it performance art.

Pete wrote the rock operas. Tommy in 69 — a deaf dumb and blind boy who becomes a messiah. Quadrophenia in 73 — a story about a mod called Jimmy, his struggles with identity, and a scooter ride to Brighton. These weren't just albums; they were narratives, proper stories set to music. Nobody was doin' that on this scale. I've got both on vinyl, the original presses, and the gatefold art on Quadrophenia is somethin' else.

Baba O'Riley (they call it Teenage Wasteland but that's not the actual title), Won't Get Fooled Again, Who Are You — songs that filled stadiums. Pete's synthesizer experiments on Who's Next opened up whole new territories. Keith Moon died in 78 at age 32, a loss that still hurts. The Who carried on, but they were never quite the same.

They matter because they showed rock could be dangerous, theatrical, and physically overwhelmin'. Every band that smashed a guitar after 'em owes a debt to Pete Townshend. They were the bridge between mod and punk, between pop and art. My Generation still sounds vital today. Proper boss.
